EAMES OFFICE DEBUTS A MODULAR HOUSING KIT AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2026

The Eames House — originally known as Case Study House No. 8, home and studio of Charles and Ray Eames since 1949 — was never conceived as a singular monument. From the outset, it was a manifesto: proof that a home could be assembled, adapted, and replicated. That concept grew from a commission by John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture, who sought efficient and accessible housing solutions for the modern family. The Eames' response was radical: replacing traditional masonry with a standardized steel structure and industrial glass panels, designed from the start for replication.

Seventy-seven years later, Eames Office revives that vision alongside Kettal with the Eames Pavilion System — a prefabricated kit of parts making its debut at the Triennale di Milano during Design Week. The system combines aluminum beams with glass, timber, and composite panels, configurable into one- or two-story structures. Visitors can walk through full-scale examples and explore the individual components, gaining insight into both the assembly logic and the system's potential across different environments.

More than a nostalgic recreation, the Pavilion System positions a twentieth-century idea within contemporary conversations around housing access, adaptability, and architectural flexibility.
